Fore!

Golf on Hong Kong Island is completely inaccessible to those of us who are not titans of industry or tycoons. There are two courses on the island where we live; one has a 20 year waiting list for membership…and it costs about $1.5 million (US dollars) to join. Obviously, neither time nor money is on our side for that one!

However, Dave and I had started to play golf in Kansas City before we moved and have begun to get the itch to play again. Besides that, our golf bags taking up precious space in our one large closet and we needed to feel justified in dragging them half way around the world! So we took a 40 minute drive up to a place called Shatin in the New Territories.

We had taken Lydia to the driving range and practiced putting with her in KC. She was super excited to try it again. On the way, a downpour began, but we were undeterred.

The range itself was a pathetic sight – mostly weeds of varying length and the ground was torn up in some areas. But, the tees were covered making the weather less relevant (luckily it wasn’t windy) and it was really cheap - $10 (US) to hit as many balls as you want for one hour. Now that is in our price range!

Lydia absolutely loved it and had some good drives.

Interestingly, my drives went a greater distance than ever before – it really surprised me. I think the tennis lessons I’ve been taking may pay off - not on the tennis court but on the golf course. Maybe this summer I should consider golf lessons to improve my tennis game!
