Angkor Wat, which means City Temple, is Cambodia’s prime attraction for visitors and is a source of great national pride – it is even featured on the country’s flag.

This Hindu temple was constructed in the early 12th century for a king and served as his capital city. It is the best preserved temple site. As such, it’s easy to envision royalty and a religious community living within the city walls. It came alive as we saw monks walking through in their bright orange robes. 
Like Angkor Thom, nearly all the walls have detailed carvings. Experts estimate that it took at least 16 hours to carve a 3’ x 3’ section. Definitely a job that I wouldn’t have the patience to undertake!
While there are no records about how many people it took to build Angkor Wat, it is known that 85,000 people were employed to maintain it when it was in active use!The temple tours were definitely geared more toward the adult audience, but the kids managed to have a fun time, too.

ReplyDeleteYes, I think Lydia looks like she's grown an inch since you've been back. I love the shot of the kids in the long hallway and the kids sitting on the rocks. That looks like a fun moment caught on camera.
