Finally Fall

When we left Hong Kong for the US on October 10, summer was in full force. As we sweated our way through some last minute errands while wearing t-shirts and shorts, we nixed our plan to dress for the weather in our US destination, which was reportedly cold, cold, cold. We not only would have looked ridiculous in long sleeves and fleece, we would have put ourselves at risk of a heat stroke!

However, we were super glad that we changed into our cold weather gear before getting off the plane in KC. Wow – 35 degrees with no humidity cut like a knife! Though the temperature was an unpleasant shock, the beautiful Fall foliage was a wonderful surprise. I can’t recall the colors being so vibrant in recent years.

Lydia and I returned to HK on the 25th (Dave came back a week earlier) and it seems that Fall arrived in Hong Kong while we were away. The temperature is now below 80 degrees, the humidity is around 70%, and there is a breeze. Though, unlike Kansas City, there is no golden palate of Fall color. Instead, it looks more like Spring. Flowering trees and bushes that had hibernated during the oppressive summer heat are blooming again.

People here have begun wearing light jackets and jeans. Our long sleeves and fleece may not be such a bad idea after the sun sets in the evening.

But, we’re not putting our summer clothes away quite yet – we’re heading to Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia (aka Borneo) on Wednesday for the Fall Break trip that we planned prior to our unexpected travel to KC. The temperature is supposed to be 85+ degrees.

Fall will have to wait!
