After nearly four months of being in Hong Kong, we're about to make our first trip back to the United States. Unfortunately, the reason isn't just for fun, but to attend Dave's grandma's funeral. The news wasn't a surprise, but is still sad, especially after the death of Dave's great-aunt just a month ago.Dave's grandma was quite a character. She made us laugh, using over-the-top, exaggerated expressions to describe her views of the world and her life experiences. She had strong opinions and had no use for the wishy-washy - if you were on the fence on an issue, you might as well be in the enemy's camp. She was fiercely independent, a staunch conservative, and a rabid K-State fan. She was also kind and generous with a terrific sense of humor. She spoke of everyone from the person who worked at the nearby Hallmark store to her mail carrier as good friends. We'll never know anyone else quite like her. She will be missed.
Although it hasn't been that long since we've been gone, we are really excited to see our family and friends. It's been a little crazy arranging international travel in two days. But, Kansas City, here we come!
I'm so sorry to hear of the loss of Dave's grandmother. She certainly was a character (from the stories I've heard), but sounded like a very loving woman, also.
