A number of people have emailed me and asked if Thanksgiving is recognized and/or celebrated in Hong Kong. The answer is no and yes.
Thanksgiving is not recognized as a holiday in HK – I guess the story of the Pilgrims and Indians isn’t that compelling to this side of the world. Dave and Lydia went to work and school as usual on Thursday. And there certainly wasn’t a Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade. Or football.
But, Thanksgiving did not go by unrecognized by the American contingent here. We actually celebrated twice – once on Thursday with one other family from Kansas City and another time on Saturday with a large group of people who were mostly from Portland. (Lydia would point out that she actually celebrated three times because she had a feast at school on Wednesday.) At each celebration, the meal was quite traditional with turkey, stuffing, and pumpkin pie.
Our festivities were much different than the annual Hofmeier Family Thanksgiving extravaganza, but it was good to mark the holiday in our faraway home. We were thankful that the other families - people who we don't know all that well - opened their homes to us!
