Fun in the Sun at Shek O

Yesterday we did something that we’ve never done on a December 13 - we went to the beach!

There are lots of beaches in Hong Kong, but the ones we’ve been to haven’t been that nice – coarse sand, trash and debris, cargo boats nearby, etc. It seemed a pity to live on an island and not have access to a good beach! But, lucky for us, we hadn’t yet discovered Shek O.

Shek O is located behind the mountain that we see from our living room. We got there by way of a narrow and windy road, passing through an area that is undeveloped due to the mountainous terrain on one side and water on the other. The village of Shek O sprouts up at the edge of an exclusive country club with a golf course (a rarity in a place where land prices are exorbitant) and is made up of a collection of hole-in-the-wall restaurants and surf shops.


The beach was a wonderful surprise. The sand was soft, the water was crystal clear, and the view was lovely. It felt like we had traveled a long, long way from Hong Kong!
After spending a couple of hours in the sun, we decided to call it a day…but left happy knowing that we have an island retreat practically on our doorstep!

As a side note – yesterday marked the sixth month of us being in Hong Kong!
