Really, Lydia rarely asks us for something specific. We felt we had to deliver, especially since she's done such a great job handling all of the recent changes in her life. But we wondered why this year it had to be penguins - not simple ladybugs, princesses, or Hello Kitty as years past.
With no Party America to save the day, we devised a plan to make penguin party goods and enlisted Lydia to help.
Dave and Lydia worked on a pinata together:
Lydia and I visited various party shops to find cake decorating supplies and hoped (in vain) to find penguin loot. It wasn't all hard work - one of the party shops also sold delicious cupcakes. They reminded us of the yummy cupcakes we ate with Lydia's Aunt Rachel at Cupcake A La Mode in Kansas City.
Lydia was a big helper making the cupcakes:
I attempted to decorate them to look like penguins. They looked a little bit like Elvis instead, but Lydia liked them.
Lydia was excited to start the day on Monday. She wore black and white (and asked Dave and me to do the same), in keeping with the penguin theme. Here she is with her presents and the finished pinata:
Since about 99% of the people we have met in HK are currently on vacation, we couldn't really pull together a birthday party at our house. So we used the "go where the people are" approach and took the party to her school. It worked out great!
We had Lydia's favorite dinner - noodles - and wrapped up the day with (another) cupcake with candles.
While it wasn't the most elaborate birthday, we all had a lot of fun preparing for it together. Happy Birthday, Lydia!

That is the cutest birthday ever! I love how you took the theme and made it work... even though penguins were no where to be found in Hong Kong. This is a good old fashioned birthday with fun, food, friends, and lots of creativity! The pinata came out great! Did she break it at school?
